MELBOURNE'S LEGAL PRECINCT

VICTORIA MARKET AND  RHSV EXCURSION

 

NHS members visited the Victoria Market  and the Royal Historical Society of Victoria  on 16th July.

The Heritage Tour of the Victoria Market  included  food stalls, with delicacies such as  truffles, and the site of the original Melbourne cemetery. At  the Royal Historical Society of Victoria Jenny Davies, the curator of the  current exhibition: Beyond the Facade: celebrating 100 years of Flinders Street Station , spoke about former businesses at the station (including the school of dance and the hat shop) and the campaign to find an appropriate current use for the upper levels.

THE BOYD FAMILY

Colin Smith, an oral historian who lives in Murrumbeena spoke about the famous artist family of Merric Boyd, who lived in Murrumbeena when it was a country village..  They also spent time on the southern Peninsula.

APRIL MEETING 2009

 

A WALK AROUND LA TROBE'S GARDEN

On April 3rd Helen Botham from the Australian Garden History Society spoke about the garden created by Governor Charles Joseph La Trobe at his home in Jolimont from 1839 to 1854.   He had a great range of indigenous and introduced plants for his family's enjoyment. Although the garden no longer exists, and the cottage has been moved to Birdswood Avenue, near the Botanical gardens plans and details are in Helen Botham's book La Trobe's Jolimont  in the Sorrento Museum, catalogue 712.5.

HMVS CERBERUS

John Rogers, President of "Save the Cerberus" spoke about the hulk we've all seen off the coast at Sandringham, which in the late 1800s was the mainstay of the Victorian Navy.  The ship was brought to Victoria to defend our shores against possible invasion by the Russians.

LIMESTONE

On Friday 7 November Lorraine Huddle, the Mornington Peninsula Shire Heritage Advisor, gave a very interesting and informative talk about the 'Maintenance and Restoration of Limestone & Architectural  Heritage.'

She stressed the need for sympathetic restoration and care  of the limestone used in the construction of local buildings. As a consultant she advises clients to  read the Burra Charter [a guide to making correct decisions about heritage buildings] and to do thorough 
research and  physical investigation of a heritage building before starting any restoration works.

WOMEN'S SUFFRAGE

Academic, Dr Judy Smart, spoke at the October meeting about the 'Women's Suffrage Movement'

in conjunction with a special  display at the Museum highlighting the 100 year anniversary of  women gaining the vote in Victoria.

Dr Smart told how in 1891 30,000  signatures were collected for a petition 'Women should Vote on Equal Terms with Men,'  and of the hard fight women had before their  proposal was adopted by the Parliament of Victoria in 1908.

THE SEPTEMBER MEETING


7TH NOVEMBER 2008

LOCAL HISTORY AND FAMILY RESEARCH

 Diane Gardner, Community Access Manager at the Public Record Office of Victoria (PROV), was the guest speaker at the September meeting of the Nepean historical Society.

Diane spoke about the role of the Public Record Office in supporting local history and family research. This includes a grant programme; research services at the PROV building in North Melbourne and on-line; exhibitions and training. 

Her talk was illustrated with photographs and plans of the Nepean area from the collections of the PROV.

The talk gave members ideas on how to make better use of the PROV   to assist in the work of the Society.
